Members of the Ulster Squad of the Special Olympics team who all reside in the Newry and Mourne area were honoured with a Civic Reception hosted by Mayor Mick Murphy after winning an incredible 42 medals in the Special Olympics Ireland Games held in Limerick

Speaking at the Reception Mayor Murphy said:

Members of the Ulster Special Olympics Team at the Newry ReceptionTo win an Olympic medal is the height of any athletics sporting career and you have all done Newry and Mourne proud.

In every sport, from aquatics, football, Kayaking and Bowling, each one of you put your heart and soul into the games and this is evident in the number of medals you won.

However, this could not have been achieved without the input of the coaches who travelled to the games; Without these people it would be impossible to run this event. These were the people who were there for the athletes to ensure that they were safe and that they were having the time of their lives.

The sponsorship drive showed Newry and Mourne as an area of outstanding generosity. The Mayor at the time Mr John Feehan and Big O led the drive. Thousands of pounds were raised from the people of Newry and Mourne and without this sponsorship the team could have competed in Limerick.

In conclusion could I once again congratulate the team. You have been great ambassadors for your families, your communities and for the whole of Newry and Mourne.

Well done and can I wish each and every one of you every success in the future.
