Newry's New Mayor

Bessbrook councillor John Feehan has been elected Newry and Mourne’s mayor for 2009, promising to dedicate himself to the economic revitalisation of the district.

The SDLP representative was unchallenged for the post at the district council’s annual AGM on Monday evening. Newry councillor Charlie Casey was also selected for the post of Deputy Mayor.

It is the second time in three years that the Sinn Fein councillor has held the post. The councillors will serve as the district’s second last Mayor and Deputy Mayor before the amalgamating with Down District Council in 2011. Councillor Feehan, who has represented the Fews ward since 1999, was nominated by party colleague Gary Stokes. “John Feehan has an impressive record of serving the entire community over many years,” said councillor Stokes. “He is both an active member of Newry Musical Society and a founder member of the Bessbrook Players drama group. He has also played a leading role in the Carnbane League.” “I know John will be an excellent ambassador for the area,” he added.

Accepting his nomination councillor Feehan said he would work hard to further promote the excellent positive image our area has, both nationally and internationally. “We are in the middle of a global financial crisis,” he said. “I love Newry and Mourne and I wish to see us plan together to develop strategies ensuring our region comes out the other end of this crisis stronger and better prepared to grasp opportunities.”

Councillor Charlie Casey, nominated by Newry councillor Brendan Curran, was also unchallenged for the post of deputy mayor. “John Feehan is a diligent and hard working member of this council. I look forward to supporting him in his role as first citizen,” he said.

Tributes were also paid to outgoing mayor and deputy mayor, Sinn Fein’s Colman Burns and UUP Kilkeel councillor Isaac Hanna. Councillor Brendan Curran said both men had been hugely successfully in working together to lead Newry and Mourne, making the entire district proud. “I want to congratulate both councillors for an excellent year, tirelessly representing Newry and Mourne,” he said. “ Our district will be much better as a result of both your achievements in promoting the area and opening up the council to all sections of the community.”
